A Career to Consider

Do you love working with people? Do you find healthcare and the healthcare system interesting, but you're not quite sure if you want to pursue years of education to become a doctor? That’s okay! The vast majority of healthcare employees are not doctors. In fact, most healthcare workers have jobs that require less than four years of college. Four-year colleges are a great fit for a lot of people, but there are plentiful opportunities in the allied health field if you’re not ready for or interested in pursuing a 4-year degree.

Allied health careers abound in the Spokane region. Because Spokane is the largest healthcare “hub” between Seattle and Minneapolis, a lot of people come to this region for healthcare service, which means there are many major healthcare employers in the Spokane area. What does this mean for you? There’s a great need for a variety of hands-on, frontline healthcare workers.

On the Rise

The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics says healthcare provided 13.5 million jobs in 2004. And if that’s not enough to convince you that this is a great industry, it’s projected that 3.6 million more new jobs will be created between 2004 and 2014. These jobs are in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor and dentist offices, public health departments and many other healthcare settings in communities across the nation. While the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area is a great place to live and work, you may want to venture out after you’ve completed a training program. You can know that your allied health experience and training is in high demand across the nation!

Good Jobs, Good Wages
Allied health jobs pay good wages and many offer excellent benefits. In fact, the Department of Labor says the average earnings of non-supervisory workers in most healthcare segments are higher than the average for all private industry. Check out the links on this page to learn more about each career and their potential earnings as well as what programs are available at local community and technical colleges. Don't forget – when you contact the college you are interested in, be sure to ask about their placement rates and average starting salary for graduates.

But it’s not just about the money! These are very challenging and rewarding jobs, with opportunity and potential for growth and advancement
